SPRINGFIELD, VA -- With a flag background and soaring eagle, 11-year-old Angelica A. Gates drew her family in a winning entry to the Armed Services YMCA Millennium Art Contest.
Angelica, the 6th grade daughter of Staff Sgt. Stephen and Eugena Gates of Marine Corps Air Station Parris Island, S.C., will receive a $500 US Savings Bond in the contest that supports Military Family Week in November.
Second place was awarded to Whitney Price, another 6th grader. The 11-year-old daughter of Master Sgt. Edward Price of Camp Foster, Okinawa, wins a $100 US Savings Bond.
Winning entries will be posted in August on the Armed Services YMCA web
site, www.asymca.org.
The Armed Services YMCA sponsors the annual art contest with support from GEICO, primarily to provide artwork for the Military Family Week poster.
Military Family Week, this year Nov. 19-26, is dedicated to recognizing the contributions and sacrifices of military families in support of their service member. The poster, with a letter from the President and each service's senior enlisted advisors, is mailed in September to family support centers, libraries, and chaplains.
