Aviation continuation pay influenced by aircraft type

21 Sep 2007 | Cpl. Kaitlyn Scarboro-Vinklarek

Congress authorized special pay to eligible Marine Aviation captains and majors for fiscal year 2008 based on their specific military occupational specialty, in accordance with the Aviation Continuation Pay program.

This arrangement varies from previous years when the program paid according to the Marine’s designation as a fixed- or rotor-wing pilot.

According to a Marine Corps Bulletin 7720, aviation continuation pay is a special pay incentive for pilots accessed annually based on manpower needs for Marine pilots.

The program is intended to provide a proactive, long-term aviation career incentive for those currently under contract.

For Marine pilots, this year’s maximum incentive of $20,000 represents an approximately $2,000 increase from last year’s maximum incentive.

Eligible officers must currently serve under military occupational specialties: 7509, 7543, 7523, 7556, 7557, 7532, 7564, 7562, 7565, 7563, 7566, 7525, and 7588.

Commanding officers should determine the eligibility of Marines according to their primary MOS.

Captains who have previously failed selection for promotion to major are ineligible for the program.

Two types of contracts are available based on the current number of years the Marine has served as a commissioned officer.

A short-term contract is available for Marines who are two years or less away from completing pilots 13 years of commissioned service.

The full-length contract will be determined according to the number of months an officer has left to complete 16 years of commissioned service.

Officers will be paid for each full year of the contract and a residual payment for the remaining months of the last year of the contract with prorated payments to the nearest whole month.

To apply for a contract, submit an administrative action form or standard naval letter through the chain of command in the format provided by MarAdmin 551/07.

(1) FIXED WING PILOTS:
