The manager of The Great Escape has earned recognition as one of the Armed Forces’ top recreation professionals.

Diana McCluskey, who strictly goes by “DJ”, earned one of ten 2007 Armed Services Fellow Awards bestowed by the Armed Forces Recreation Society. She was one of three Marine Corps award recipients in this category.

The message describes the Fellow Award as recognizing outstanding recreation professionals esponsible for overseeing and implementing recreational programs.

McCluskey has worked in the recreation department aboard the air station for the past 20 years.

Anne Panattoni, the Semper Fit director here, nominated McCluskey for the award because of her selfless service and dedication to the enrichment of the lives of service members.

“DJ’s creative and always goes above and beyond what is expected,” said Panattoni. “She is passionate about her job and truly cares about the Marines and sailors she serves.”

McCluskey interned at The Great Escape while attending San Diego State University. Over the past twenty years, she gained experience in a variety of recreational jobs here at the bowling center, outdoor adventure center, managing the enlisted club and catering before she transferred back to The Great Escape.

“My heart is in recreation,” said McCluskey. “I am lucky to have the opportunity to watch service members meet baseball players at events like military appreciation days. Service members fight for our freedom and it’s the least I can do to provide environments where they can relax.”

McCluskey, originally from Plattsburgh, N.Y., moved to San Diego after graduating high school. After her first recreation class at SDSU, she immediately discovered her passion.

On her days off, McCluskey enjoys spending time at the beach with her husband Robert and 10 year-old son, Andrew. She serves on the parent-teacher association at her son’s school and stays actively involved with his sports teams.

She also enjoys making crafts and anything that puts her creativity to the test.

Complete results from this year’s award competition were published in MarAdmin 421/07.
