NEW YORK -- Approximately 400 Marines from 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment currently aboard USS IWO JIMA in support of New York City?s 15th annual Fleet Week celebration were up early this morning and ready to run.
Physical training is an essential part of being a Marine, and although these Marines are in town to be honored by the city of New York in the events of Fleet Week, the training never stops for the force in readiness.
The Marines started the morning with warm up exercises at the pier, and then ran from the IWO JIMA through mid-town Manhattan to the famed Central Park. The early morning serenity of the park was burst by thundering cadence as the Marine formation moved by.
Most of these Marines are no strangers to Central Park as 2/25 is based in nearby Garden City, NY. The reserve regiment was activated in January 2002 to provide operational relief to the II Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for one year. This is part of the largest activation of reserve Marines to date. On June 1 these Marines are scheduled to return to Camp Lejeune where they will continue their support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
