Marines

Are you tax compliant?

4 Apr 2001 | MCNEWS Headquarters Marine Corps

In a recent memo distributed to the Chief of Naval Operations and the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Acting Secretary of the Navy, Robert B. Pirie, Jr., has asked all Navy and Marine Corps personnel and retirees to comply with the federal income tax system.Although the rate of compliance among federal employees and retirees is higher than the general public, statistical data shows that 6.27 percent of Department of the Navy personnel have some type of delinquency in federal income tax in the form of a balanced owed or a tax return unfiled. The total dollar amount of non-compliance among federal employees and retirees is close to $2.5 Billion. Tax delinquency among federal employees can damage the credibility of the tax administration system, according to a statement released by the Internal Revenue Service. By maintaining the highest level of tax compliance, federal employees will bolster public confidence in the government and the tax system. For additional information, personnel can contact their local IRS office or call 1-800-829-1040 for assistance with filing a return or resolving an overdue balance. Forms, publications, and information are also available on at www.irs.gov.
