Biography

Division of Analytics and Performance Optimization
Ms. Mary Ellen (Ellie) Stone

Before assuming her current position as Director, Division of Analytics and Performance Optimization (DAPO) June 2023, Ms. Stone was the Research Integration Branch Head at DAPO for nearly three years.  She was a Supervisory Survey Statistician and Deputy Branch Head for Manpower Studies and Analysis Branch (MPA, M&RA), a Social Scientist for Marine & Family Programs (MF, M&RA), and a Research Analyst for Headquarters G-10.  Prior to joining Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC) in 2015, Ms. Stone was an adjunct professor at Cleveland Statue University and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).  She was also a research assistant at CWRU, working on several research studies funded by NIH (National Institutes of Health), NIA (National Institute on Aging), and NIMH (National Institute on Mental Health).   

 

During her tenure at HQMC, Ms. Stone has been the Principal Investigator and Co-investigator of several research studies, such as the Life Course Study and the Retention Prediction Network.  Ms. Stone has completed or overseen the completion of several technical reports, senior leader briefs, executive summaries, and one-page summaries of analytic findings ranging from topics such as the effects of blast overpressure to understanding sexual assault in the Marine Corps.  She has received several awards during her tenure, including a letter of commendation.  Ms. Stone is currently developing a program evaluation capability within DAPO, which will provide the Marine Corps actionable recommendations for improving the welfare of Marines.     

 

Ms. Stone received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Gerontology at Miami University (Ohio).  She is ABD (all but dissertation) from the doctoral Sociology program at CWRU, where she focused on research methods and health policy.  Ms. Stone is the recipient of the Marie Haug Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Gerontological Research, and the Graduate Dean’s Instructional Excellence Award from CWRU.  Ms. Stone received two Advanced Doctoral Study Fellowships from CWRU and two consecutive $10,000 grants from the U.S. Social Security Administration’s Improving Disability Determination Process Small Grant Program.
