Biography
Andrea "Andie" VanLanen
Deputy Counsel for the Commandant

Ms. VanLanen serves as Deputy Counsel for the Commandant, where she is responsible for the daily operations of a world-wide legal organization with over 100 attorneys and professional support staff.  She is actively engaged in advising on numerous legal and business issues facing the Marine Corps.  She joined the Commandant’s legal team in July of 2023, after more than 20 years with the Department of the Navy’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC).

After being promoted to SES on 1 August 2022, Ms. VanLanen served as Special Counsel for Litigation at the Naval Litigation Office (NLO) where she was responsible for the most important litigation under the cognizance of the General Counsel.  She supervised approximately 40 attorneys and professional support staff who represent the Navy on significant cases brought before the U.S. Federal Courts and the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals.

Before joining NLO, Ms. VanLanen served as Deputy Counsel for Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) where she co-led a team of over 60 attorneys and professional support staff in support of CNIC’s “Fleet, Fighter, Family” mission across CNIC’s 70 installations worldwide.  Her assignment at CNIC HQ, followed her tour as Counsel, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Europe Africa Central (NAVFAC EURAFCENT), in Naples, Italy, where her team provided legal support for two Fleets and five Combatant Commands in executing construction and contingency requirements.

Before being appointed Counsel at NAVFAC EURAFCENT, Ms. VanLanen served as Counsel, Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division, where she supervised a team of over 30 attorneys and paralegals in executing the Research Development Technology and Engineering mission.  She spent her first 10 years with OGC as a procurement attorney at the Naval Air Systems Command, supporting the development and sustainment of major weapon systems, including F/A-18E/F; EA-18G; CH-53E; CH-53K; VH-3D; VH-60N.

Ms. VanLanen holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oregon; a Master of Arts degree in International Studies from The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs; and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law. Ms. VanLanen has received a Superior Civilian Service Award and multiple Meritorious Civilian Service Awards.
