Deputy Commandant P&R, Lieutenant General John M. Jansen

As the Deputy Commandant for Programs and Resources within Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps in Washington D.C., Lieutenant General John Jansen serves as the principal advisor to the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the principal spokesman within the Department of Defense and with Congress on matters of the Marine Corps’ five year program, annual budget, current year fiscal execution, and audit. The department he leads is responsible for developing and executing a $44B annual budget and for the financial management of capital assets in excess of $90B.

For more than three decades, he has led Marines in security operations around the globe to include nine overseas deployments; six years stationed in Japan, Germany, and Italy; and nearly two years deployed aboard ship. He has commanded at the squadron, group, and brigade levels. He has spent an extensive amount of his career in Asia working and training with allies and partners, in particular with the Japanese Self Defense Force’s Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade; the Philippines Marine Corps and Philippine Navy; the Australian Amphibious Force; the Republic of Korea Marine Corps and Navy, and the Indonesian Korps Marinir. He has served in four separate combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as contingency operations over Bosnia/Herzegovina. He served as a Forward Air Controller with 2d Battalion, 8th Marines, while deployed to the Western Pacific, an Arms Control Team Chief with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency out of Germany supporting arms control inspections in Ukraine, Russia, and Belorussia and was the Operations Officer for 1st Marine Aircraft Wing on Okinawa, Japan. He is a graduate of Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and is a graduate of the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy. A Marine Fighter/Attack pilot, carrier pilot, and Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) graduate, he has flown over 2,800 hours and made 480 arrested carrier landings in the F/A-18 Hornet and was recognized as the 2006 Marine Tailhooker of the Year by the Tailhook Association. His previous assignment was as the 44th Commandant of the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy within National Defense University.

LtGen Jansen graduated from Indiana University’s Kelly School of Business in 1986 where he earned a BS in Finance. He is married to the former Ann Lorraine Milton of Indianapolis, Indiana and has three children: Joe - married to the former Nicole Kleiner, Alexandra, and Gabrielle.
