Colonel Hamilton, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was commissioned in 1988 and certified as a judge advocate in 1991 serving initially in Okinawa, Japan as Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, as a Detailed Defense Counsel, 3d Force Service Support Group and then as Staff Judge Advocate, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.  Colonel Hamilton was next assigned to the Navy-Marine Corps Appellate Review Activity in Washington, D.C., as a Criminal Law Advisor and then Appellate Government Counsel.  In 1998, Colonel Hamilton reported to Camp LeJeune, North Carolina where he served as trial counsel, Military Justice Officer and Chief Trial Counsel.  As a reserve officer, Colonel Hamilton was assigned as an Appellate Government Counsel when in 2001, he was mobilized to the Operational Law Branch, Judge Advocate Division, and then assigned as the Deputy Legal Advisor to newly formed DoD Criminal Investigation Task Force in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.  His next assignments included as the Advisor to the Military Commissions Appointing Authority, Instructor in the Law of War Training Detachment, Deputy Officer-in-Charge, Reserve Judge Advocate Command Support Section and as Deputy Associate General Counsel (International Affairs) in the DoD General Counsel’s Office.  In 2011, Colonel Hamilton was mobilized again and deployed with II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) to Helmand Province, Afghanistan as the Officer-in-Charge of Development in the Stability Operations Section (C-9).  Colonel Hamilton next served as an Operational Law Advisor, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, U.S. European Command, Stuttgart, Germany.  Prior to assuming his current duties, Colonel Hamilton was assigned as the Reserve Officer-in-Charge, Legal Services Support Section-East. 

 

Colonel Hamilton received a B.A. (cum laude) in history from the Villanova University in 1987, a J.D., from The Dickinson School of Law in 1990, and a Master of Laws from the Judge Advocate General School, U.S. Army, in 1998.
