Colonel Eric R. Kleis was commissioned in August 1990. Upon graduation from the University of Oklahoma School of Law, TBS and NJS, he joined the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate at Marine Corps Base Quantico. While assigned to MCB Quantico, he served as a defense counsel, review officer, and labor law advisor.
In June 1996, Colonel Kleis reported to Marine Corps Logistics Base, Barstow, CA for duties as the Deputy Staff Judge Advocate. Upon successful completion of this tour, Colonel Kleis was selected to attend Amphibious Warfare School. Upon graduation in May 1999, he reported to the III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan. While assigned to III MEF, Colonel Kleis served as the III MEF Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, participating in numerous exercises. Additionally, Colonel Kleis deployed to East Timor as the United States Forces, International Forces East Timor, Judge Advocate.
In the summer of 2002, Colonel Kleis was selected to attend The Judge Advocate General School of the Army at Charlottesville, VA. After graduation, with a Masters in Military Justice in May 2003, he was assigned as the Head, Judge Advocate Support Branch, Judge Advocate Division, Headquarters Marine Corps, Pentagon. Colonel Kleis was then selected to be the Commanding Officer, Headquarters Battalion, Marine Forces Reserve, New Orleans, LA. After a successful command tour, Colonel Kleis was assigned to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC as the Director of the Depot Law Center and assumed those duties in August 2008. On 1 December 2008, Colonel Kleis was assigned to the 6th Marine Regiment as the Regimental Judge Advocate for their deployment to Al Anbar, Iraq from January 2009 to September 2009. During October 2009, Colonel Kleis returned to Parris Island, SC and resumed his duties as the Director of the Depot Law Center. During July 2010, Colonel Kleis assumed the duties as the Staff Judge Advocate MCRD PI/ERR. In July 2012, Colonel Kleis was assigned as the Staff Judge Advocate, Marine Forces Reserve, New Orleans, LA. In July 2016, Colonel Kleis assumed the duties as the OIC LSSS-NCR in Quantico, VA. In August 2018, Colonel was selected by the Staff Judge Advocate to the Commandant to be the Deputy Staff Judge Advocate to the Commandant.
Colonel Kleis’ personal decorations include the Legion of Merit with two gold star, Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.Bottom of Form
