DoD Cyber Security Range

About the Cyber Range
Collapse All Expand All

The Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Security Range (CSR) finds its genesis and funding with the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI) and was chartered to develop and host a realistic DoD Information Network (DoDIN). This fully accredited environment provides maneuver areas where Cyber Warriors can conduct cyber training, testing and exercises. The realistic closed Zone-D enclave eliminates risk to production networks.

The focus of the DoD CSR is to provide our Cyber Warriors with an environment identical to their daily field of battle.... "TRAIN AS WE FIGHT". At NO COST to the DoD customer, the DoD CSR can be accessed either REMOTELY (using a Remote Boundary Suite (RBS) via a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnel) or ONSITE in Stafford, Virginia. However, the staff of the DoD CSR does not conduct actual testing, evaluations or develop customer training curriculums. Conduct of actual classroom training and Cyber-related exercises are customer functions facilitated by range personnel. Rather, the DoD CSR operates and maintains the maneuver areas required to execute effective cyber tests and training.

  • Funded by the 2009 Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI)
  • Located near Marine Corps Base, Quantico in Stafford, VA
  • Program Sponsorship provided by Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA)
  • Executive Agency is provided by Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC), Command, Control,  Communications and Computers (C4) Cybersecurity Division (CY)
  • No associated costs to users
  • Remote access is available via a Remote Boundary Suite

The DoD Cyber Range is an operationally realistic DoDIN representative environment with repeatable processes:
◾Mitigates risk to Mission Critical network systems
◾Provides customer direct Command and Control (C2) and observation of events
◾Allows for repeat, refresh and reply of cyber events
◾Supports Red Team and Blue Force free fire maneuvers
◾Facilitates rapid user proficiency / user experience
◾Improves and validates Cyber Warrior skill sets
◾Validates pre-deployment practices and product configuration changes/updates
◾Assesses and validates Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) and multiple CY/Computer Network Defense (CND) tools
◾Enables penetration testing and incident response capabilities

  • Fully accredited Zone D Enclave
  • Virtual Internet replicates the full Domain Naming Service (DNS) Provider root structure
  • Provider edge routers generate a worldust traffic generation capabilities
  • Able to replicate Wide Area Network (WAN) transport methods (variable bandwidth latency)
  • Enterprise Services Center (ESC) hosts enterprise mail, Sourcefire, ArcSight, and Host Based Security Services (HBSS)

The DoD Cyber Security Range has supported missions for the following organizations:
◾US Marine Corps
◾US Army
◾US Navy
◾US Air Force
