The Casualty Assistance Calls Officer (CACO) acts on behalf of the Commandant of the Marine Corps in assisting the survivors of active duty Marines from the initial death notification to assistance with coordinating funeral arrangements and applying for benefits and entitlements with various organizations. When assigned as a CACO, it becomes your Primary Duty and requires the completion of the Casualty Assistance Calls Officer (CACO) Training Program. The training provides detailed instructions on the duties and responsibilities that the CACO will be required to perform.

The HQMC Casualty Section will walk each Marine assigned through the entire Casualty process. CACOs are not trained to be the "subject matter experts" for the benefits and entitlements managed by the VA, SSA, or TRICARE. They are however trained to answer general questions about benefits or entitlements and to act as enablers with designated experts who will more appropriately explain the specific administrative requirements to the next of kin. The Casualty Section has also established a "Long-Term Assistance Program" to assist survivors on an indefinite basis. Such assistance includes, but is not limited to, keeping families connected to the appropriate benefits counselors. The Casualty Assistance Calls Officer (CACO) Training Program is available online through the External Links section of this webpage.
