Flag still flying high after 64 years
Feb 24, 2009
Col. William K. Lietzau, the commanding officer of Headquarters Battalion, Headquarters Marine Corps, stands with two Marine veterans who fought in the battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, just moments after a flag raising ceremony Feb. 23 at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Va. Active duty and reserve Marines, Marine veterans, retired Marines and civilian spectators gathered at the memorial, which depicts the five Marines and one Navy corpsman raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi during World War II, to observe the 64th anniversary of the actual flag-raising.
